UPDATE: Chief Justice of Nigeria to be charged for crime today

UPDATE:The CJN did not appear by himself in court but was ably represented by over 50 SANs, although only 5 were allowed to announce appearance on record. The SANs argued that the CCT lacks jusrisdiction. What saved the day, however, was their argument that the CJN was not personally served with the charges against him. The prosecution seemed to have given the document to his PA. So the CCT adjourned till this Thursday, 17th January, 2019 so the CJN can be served personally this time.

Meanwhile, Hon Justice E. N. Maha, a presiding judge of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, has granted an Ex Parte Injunction restraining the CCT from proceeding with the hearing of the case involving the CJN, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit pending before him. In other words, the CCT is to hold on until Justice Maha decides whether the matter against the CJN can go on.

And now Thisdaylive reports that the federal government will allegedly arrest the CJN with a warrant on Tuesday. This is after the FG has asked the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to freeze the CJN 's bank accounts as well as those of his family members. Some SAN have said this is unconstitutional.

It is all over the news now that the Chief Justice of Nigeria will be charged before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) today, Monday 15th January, 2019 for false or none declaration of assets as a public officer. The man who started the story with his petition, Dennis Aghanya, has been identified as President Buhari's former aide, the president denied being aware of the charge and Aghanya himself has said that the presidency is not the sponsor behind his petition.

The opposition parties are among early reactors to the breaking news and seemed not to believe the president  not being aware with presidential aspirant of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, warning the president not to destabilise Nigeria with his "planned"removal of the CJN.

150 SANs are said to be lined up to defend the No.1 man in the judiciary. And in an interesting twist to the story the CJN seems to have already defend himself saying he forgot to declare his assets. Nigerians are still reeling with this revelation.
