Workers explain why they shut down Shoprite stores in Lugbe, Abuja

Shoprite workers at Lugbe, Abuja, on Friday, embarked on another round of protest, shutting down the company over a misunderstanding with the management. The workers complained that they are sold off with the company to it's new owners as though they are animals, despite the unjust way they are being treated as Shoprite workers.

Cherish Ogenyi, the unit chairman and coordinator of the northern region of the National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees (NUSDE), an affiliate of the Nigerian Labour Congress, in an interview disclosed that the action from the workers is following the purchase of Shoprite Nigeria by some Nigerian investors, of which the workers were transferred to the new owners without the consent of the workers. Mr Ogenyi said the workers are supposed to be paid off by Shoprite, but they did not, which is reason for the shut down of their stores.
