Court says the President has Power to extend the IGP’s Tenure



Following the law suit by a lawyer, Maxwell Okpara, asking whether or not the President could extend the tenure of an IGP whose tenure has ended, Justice Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja has ruled that he found the provisions of both the Constitution and the Nigeria Police Act to be silent on the matter .

As such and to his understanding, the President having duly appointed the IGP in the first place, he has the right to extend the tenure pending the appointment of a substantive IGP.

The lawsuit was filed to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to extend the tenure of the immediate past IGP, Muhammed Abubakar Adamu for three months after his retirement age caught up with him while he was acting as IGP.
