UPDATE: Thousands of Nigerians to miss their visa appointments as the United States embassy in Abuja and its consulate in Lagos have shutdown indefinitely.

UPDATE: The US Mission in Nigeria has clarified in a statement by the Information Office of the Embassy in Abuja that the  U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain open during the U.S. government shutdown. Earlier reports were seem misinterpreted.

Thousands of Nigerians to miss their visa appointments as the United States embassy in Abuja and its consulate in Lagos have shutdown indefinitely.

This is nothing personal to Nigerians. people who work at U.S. embassies may be unable to cover operational costs as cash stops flowing during a U.S. government shutdown. This is one of the  ways a U.S. government shutdown affects the rest of the world.
The shutdown began at midnight Friday and it is unclear right now how long this will last.
