US Embassy and Winners Chapel say that Bishop Oyedepo was not denied visa


According to the United States embassy on its official Twitter page, the news making the rounds that Bishop Oyedepo was denied visa is false. Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel has also issued an official message to the effect that Oyedepo still has a valid US visa on his passport and would not have applied for another one on that Thursday. PDP to protest Supreme Court judgement on Imo today


After taking to the streets in Imo State, the PDP is set to protest again in Abuja today over the Supreme Court judgement that removed Emeka Ihedioha as governor of Imo. PDP members from the 36 states of the federation and FCT Abuja are expected for the Protest.

The protest march will take off from Legacy House in Maitama, through Hilton hotel junction to the Federal Secretariat before ending at the Supreme Court. The PDP has reportedly sought permission from the Police to ensure a peaceful protest. Read more details at Thisday.

Federal Government exempts 20 food items, some products and services from 7.5% VAT

To stop the cost of living from rising, the Federal Government has exempted 20 basic food items and so e products and services from the increase of VAT to 7.5%. This is courtesy of the new Finance Bill 2019.

The food items include fish, meat, fruits, cereals and cooking oils. Also exempted are school fees, sanitary products and microfinance banks services. Read more details at theGuardian.

NERC approves increase in electricity tariffs nationwide


Electricity tariff will increase nationwide from April in 2020 as directed by Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) operating across the country.

Under the new price regime, industrial customers in Abuja who have been paying between N20.95 and N27.22 per kWh, will now be paying between N36.07 and N47.09 per kWh, while those who have been paying about N20.06 per kWh since 2015, will now be paying about N35.74 per kWh.

Taxpayers to get Tax Clearance Certificates in 2020 from today


In order to ease difficulties encountered in the issuance of Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC) in 2020, the new FIRS Executive Chairman, Muhammad Nami, in a public notice has ordered that TCC be issued quickly to all eligible taxpayers from today 2nd January to 31st January, 2020 in a special 30-day window. 

This will help eligible taxpayers obtain their TCC on time to conduct businesses (like bid for contracts) for the new year in line with section 101(1) of the Companies Income Tax Act. The Executive Chairman warns, however, that any taxpayer who takes advantage of this opportunity to mislead the agency to issue a TCC shall be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Police Inspector Kills Corporal Colleague before Taking His Own Life


On Saturday, at Dutsen Alhaji, a police
inspector shot dead his colleague, a Corporal, and in the process injured a Deputy Superintendent of Police before taking his own life. The FCT Police spokesman, Bala Ciroma, has confirmed the incident and says a discreet investigation has been ordered.

Federal Government Rejects US Report Listing Nigeria as a Country with Religious Violence


The Federal Government has rejected the US report that lists Nigeria as a country that violates religious freedom saying the report is based on the antics of failed and unpatriotic politicians. Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, made this known in a statement released on Sunday.

Meanwhile the umbrella bodies of Christians and Muslims, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI), are disagreeing over the US report. CAN thinks the report has confirmed its suspicions that Christians are now endangered in Nigeria, JNI is of the opinion that the US did not respect Nigeria's sovereignty by the report.
