An Upper Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja had on Tuesday ordered Alhaji Atiku Abubakar(son of former Nigerian president Atiku Abubakar), to hand over custody of his three sons to his divorced wife, Maryam Sherif. The two are said to have gotten married on Feb. 2, 2012, a marriage which produced three boys and was divorced in 2018.
Maryam had sought custody of her children in court through her counsel, Nasir Saidu, after being denied access to them in 2019. The judge, Bashir Danmaisule, while delivering judgement relied on the authority contained in FIQH ALA MAZAHIB AL – ARBAH saying that custody of children lies in the hands of the mother, so long she's not remarried, under Islamic law.
