Bribery at Borders: Responsible for worsening fuel subsidy crisis

The news is rife with how security agents and border communities aid smuggling of petroleum products, thus worsening the fuel subsidy crisis in the country.

Punch reports that border communities in Ogun, Adamawa, Katsina, Sokoto, Borno, Taraba and Kwara states have witnessed how security agents turned a blind eye to petroleum products smugglers after receiving bribes from them.

This is flouting the Presidential Memo issued through the Nigeria Customs Service on November 6, 2019 to the effect that petroleum products should not be supplied to petrol stations within 20-km of borders as part of efforts to check the smuggling of the products.

While small smugglers using jerrycans are apprehended the big smugglers with tankers allegedly go scot free. The security authorities have denied being involved in the crime and instead blamed residents of the border communities for the it.
