A Russian-speaking man who gave his name only as Alexander (left and centre) was found inside a brown bear den in the Russian province of Tuva, near the border with Mongolia (inset), by a group of passing hunters after their dogs stopped and refused to move on. While the hunters initially thought the man had died and been mummified in the dry air, they were stunned to learn he was still alive. Alexander has told medics that a bear (file image right) broke his back and then dragged him to the den, where it kept him for a future meal.
