President Muhammadu Buhari did not attend the burial of the late Chief of Army Staff, (Lieutenant) General Attahiru. He was represented by his Defence Minister (Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi (retd.) This has sparked a debate amongst Nigerians as to the appropriateness of the President's action and have called up references to a similar behaviour in the past.
For instance, some people say that in 2016, President Buhari attended the memorial service of 100 Kenyan soldiers killed by Alshabab but didn't attend the funeral and memorial service for hundreds of Nigerian soldiers killed by Boko Haram in Gudunbali , November 2015.
Nigerians have also called up the instance in December 2015 when Buhari attended the funeral service of former President of Benin Republic, Gen. Mathiew Kerekou bit shunned the burial of former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari in 2018.
These instances coupled with the fact that the President was absent from the recent funeral service of the late COAS, Attahiru, which held in Abuja while the President is in town has led many Nigerians to believe the President doesn't care about Nigerians. The burial of the late COAS happened in Abuja after the President returned from a four days trip to Paris.
