Ecowas Court order FG to pay Agba Jalingo N30m for torture




Journalist Agba Jalingo spent five months in custody after he published a story on how the Governor of Cross River, Ben Ayade, allegedly approved and diverted N500 million meant for the state’s microfinance bank.

Evidence was also led to show, the court that the journalist was arrested and “chained to a deep freezer for about 34 days without being charged to court, brutalised and dehumanised”.

Later, he was charged with conspiracy, terrorism, treasonable felony and an attempt to topple the State government. Although following public outcry the State Governor reportedly revealed the Journalist's troubles was caused by the Federal Government as payback for his involvement in the #RevolutionNow protest led by Omoyele Sowore.

ECOWAS Court judged the suit filed on his behalf by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project SERAP, in the Journalist's favour with condemnation of the Nigerian government for the acts, and award compensation of N30 million to Mr Jalingo for violations of his human rights.
