The report on the forensic audit of the Niger Delta
Development Commission (NDDC) has been received on behalf of President by minister of Justice and attorney-general of
the federation, Aubakar Malami, SAN.
President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2019, ordered a forensic audit of NDDC’s
operations from 2001 to 2019. Then-acting managing director of the commission, Kemebradikumo
Pondei, was sacked over allegations of
mismanagement of funds and the president appointed Effiong Akwa as the new head
of the agency in December 2020. According to Malami, in spite of the huge
resources made available to uplift the living standard of Niger Delta people
there are over 13,777 uncompleted and unverified development projects in the
Niger Delta Region and 362 accounts belonging to the NDDC were not properly
reconciled.
Also, approximately N6 trillion was given
to the Commission for the period investigated. The federal
government says it will prosecute those behind the alleged mismanagement of funds
meant for the development of the Niger Delta region.
