The only body that can certify Africa free from Polio, the African Regional Commission for Certification (ARCC) has given a vote of confidence that Africa is officially free of wild polio virus. A region is certified as wild polio free after meeting all the requirements for certification and after 3 years has passed without any detection of wild polio virus in any country in the region.
Poliomyelitis is the 2nd virus now eradicated from the continent after smallpox 40 years ago.
