Following the declaration by seccessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for a sit-at-home in the south-east region from May 29 to 31, Governor David Umahi has asked residents of Ebonyi state to ignore the sit-at-home order of the proscribed IPOB and defend themselves if attacked.
In a state-wide broadcast on Saturday May 29 to mark the sixth anniversary of his administration, the Governor said
“There should be free movement of people in the state on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and other days of the year....“Anyone who has nothing to protect himself should do so with cutlass, which should be for protection and not for attack.”
He also charged the Ebubeagu security outfit to protect the people as they go about their businesses and traders who obey the sit-at-home declaration may forfeit their shops. Procession of people is also prohibited unless organised by the government.
