Kaduna in total blackout, airport shutdown as unions begin strike

Following the announcement by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state to embark on a strike in protest against the disengagement of 4000 workers and other alleged anti-labour moves by the state government, the National Unioun of Electricity Employees (NUEE) put out a circular that read:

“In line with NLC directives on shut down of activities in Kaduna, you are hereby directed to ensure TOTAL BLACK OUT in Kaduna by 00 hours on Saturday 15th May, 2021.”

Following this, aviation workers on Sunday shut down flight operations at the Kaduna Airport in solidarity. Other unions, including railway workers, local government employees and university workers, will not resume to their duty posts on Monday.

Governor of the Kaduna State , Nasir El-Rufai, earlier stated that 90% of the FAAC was being spent on salaries for a mere 100,000 public workers against more than 9million other residents and was not sustainable. “It is gross injustice for such a micro minority to consume the majority of the resources of the State,” he said.
