The Cable reports that Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) ,
has imposed a levy of N100,000 on bakery owners in the Area Council for discharge of “harmful
hazardous substances” into the air, water and land.
According to the report, power to impose the levy is found in the provision of Section (2C) of the fourth schedule of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and failure to comply with the directive is a “punishable offence”, and could lead to the arrest of the operator and suspension of the bakery’s activities. The Bakery can however, negotiate the levy payable with an agency appointed by AMAC for the purpose.
