Thisday reveals that the real reason for the suspension of the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ms. Hadiza Bala-Usman, at the request of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was the culmination of a two-year war of attrition between the duo. It started with a disagreement in 2019 over whether or not to renew the channel management contracts of the NPA.
Although NPA placed adverts in the newspapers calling for bids, Amaechi wanted 3 Chinese companies to be awarded the contracts and bid rounds were cancelled on the orders of the minister over disagreements on the selective bids and open bids. Also the pilotage contracts of INTELS company expired and renewing them was another bone of contention between the two. This is probably why in relation to the request for Usman's suspension by Amaechi, although the Auditor-General of the Federation in a letter to the minister said NPA accounts were in order, his advice was unheeded and Usman suspended.
